Kurasu
The Japanese roaster's first store in Hong Kong
OUR TAKE
For those who enjoy hanging around the busy streets of Tsim Sha Tsui, meet KURASU — meaning "to live" in Japanese. In 2013, the brand started as a small online homeware store; today, it's a specialty coffee shop with a global presence, and now in Hong Kong.
In Tsim Sha Tsui, we are used to places with brunch food complementing coffee (think N1 Coffee, Urban Coffee Roaster, Black Sugar, Coffee Academics and Cupping Room). When it comes to purely coffee, we still like to visit The Nest on Nathan Road for a good cause, particularly when a veteran barista is on duty. KURASU falls into the latter category.
KURASU sits right next to The Mira hotel and has often been frequented by hotel guests and tourists. Its location is in an incredibly busy area, though its Japanese minimalist decor might draw you in as a temporary hideout.
Comparatively, within district, we find their coffee quality better than Japanese counterpart Omotesando at K11 MUSEA, which currently has a strong presence in Hong Kong.
Drinks of choice:
Pour overs using
— Honduras Belarmino Contreras washed, a light cup with mild notes of apple.
— Brazil Marciano Tomazini honey processed, another light roast with cane sugar and tea-like flavors.
Latte was gentler on the palate with dominant milk profile which mellowed the coffee notes.
